RDD Sampling

Since 1988, Scientific Telephone Samples (STS) has been providing the highest quality random digit (RDD) samples at the most affordable prices. Our random digit samples are scientifically constructed to yield a highly representative sample of the population under study. STS offers a large variety of sampling options and selection criteria that enables every sample to be customized to meet each client's expectations.

Our standard price for RDD samples ranges from 2¢ to 5¢ per number, depending on yearly volume, size of order, or contractual agreement.

Scientific Telephone Samples (STS) uses the highest quality, state-of-the-art technology and procedures to construct random digit samples.  All things considered, you will find STS has more database and RDD sampling methodology options available than any other sampling supplier.

Our RDD sampling frame is based on the largest database of working residential telephone exchanges and working blocks in the United States. Thus, we can draw from any part of the U.S.A. — no matter how large or small.

The information is updated quarterly, and cross checked monthly against area code and assigned exchange lists furnished by the telephone companies. Exchanges and/or working blocks designated for business or governmental telephones, car/boat/plane mobile units, and other commercial or institutional services, are screened out.

STS can furnish any type of random digit sample desired, including:

  • National samples (continental U.S. only, or with Alaska and Hawaii)
  • Census regions or divisions
  • State samples
  • By DMA, ADI, CMSA or MSA
  • County samples (FIPS code)
  • ZIP code samples
  • City samples — configured by ZIP codes assigned to that city
  • Exchange samples — generated from your list of three digit exchanges (NPA-NXX)
  • Operating company samples - selected using exchanges covered by phone companies
  • Congressional District samples
  • Targeted RDD (including nearly 5000 demographic and lifestyle variables and special databases for high income areas, Hispanics, African Americans, & Asians)
  • Radius samples — STS offers full in-house mapping capabilities
  • Urban-suburban-rural areas,
  • Cluster samples
  • All other traditional sampling methods including EPSEM (Type A) and Weighted (Type B) samples. Plus, two stage designs based on the Mitofsky-Waksberg or Sudman methodologies.

Samples can also be geo-coded by these types geographic variables, as well as hundreds of other demographic and psychographic variables.

What is RDD Sampling?

Random digit (RDD) sampling is the generally thought of as the most representative means of sampling for marketing research. Short for Random Digit D ialing, RDD samples are configured to be highly representative of any given population. Marketing researchers tend to favor random digit samples for studies when representation and sample accuracy is of key importance.

As an important point, RDD sampling includes both those households listed in telephone directories and those with unlisted, or non-published, numbers. It is generally known that households with unlisted phone numbers are somewhat different, tending to be more upscale higher income consumers who have chosen to have their phone number "unpublished" for privacy issues. For more information on how missing unlisted households can be detrimental to the accuracy of any research study, read our report on the differences between Listed and RDD sampling.
