County (FIPS) Codes
Each county in the United States has been assigned a five digit FIPS code. FIPS is an acronym standing for Federal Information Processing S
tandards.
Each FIPS code is comprised of two parts:
- A two digit number referring the State. (see State code list)
- A three digit number denoting the county within the appropriate state.
For example, 06037 is the FIPS code for Los Angeles County, California. "06" refers to the State of California, while "037" refers to Los Angeles County.
There are currently 3,141 Counties in the United States, each with it's own five digit FIPS code.
